Protect the Vote

“Voting is our right, our power, and our responsibility.” - Laura Bush

Every American should have have easy access to voting in every election. I will oppose any legislation that limits your access to the ballot box and will propose the following reforms:

  • Fair representation including use of ranked choice voting or instant runoff voting. South Carolinians in the military who are serving overseas already vote this way.

  • Reduce gerrymandering by

    • Using non-partisan councils of citizens to choose voting districts so that voters choose their leaders instead of politicians choosing their voters

    • Prohibiting mid-decade redistricting

  • Get big money out of politics allowing voters, not rich donors to decide elections.

    • Overturn Citizens United which made it possible for the ultra-rich to give unlimited political donations starting in 2010

    • Ban corporate PACs

    • Create a system of public campaign financing

    • Make dark money illegal in all 50 states (Currently dark money funds political campaigns in South Carolina. Click here to look up any politician's dark money contributions).

  • Allow absentee voting for everyone without the need for an excuse (as we did in 2020).

  • Add early voting days on at least one Saturday and one Sunday each election (as we had in 2020 - 2024).

  • Protect mail-in voting and ensure that absentee ballots are delivered and counted.

  • Enact automatic voter registration when you turn 18 (or if you’re eligible)

  • End precinct closures without notice by requiring that voters be notified at least 72 hours in advance if their polling place is closed or changed.

  • Guarantee accessibility at every polling place with adequate parking, working equipment such as rolling poll booths for curbside voting, and no structural barriers such as steep steps or extended walks.

  • Use multi-member districts to choose Representatives.

  • Support bills that advance voting rights such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

  • Create a national holiday for national elections allowing everyone to vote.
