Fighting for Education
Most decisions about what happens inside a South Carolina classroom — curriculum, local funding, hiring — rightly belong to our state, our counties and our districts. But Congress controls something just as important: whether the federal government keeps its promises to students with disabilities, low-income schools, first-generation college students, and working families trying to afford a degree.
Here is what I will fight for in Congress:
Create a national teacher pay incentive program to increase teacher salaries.
Defend Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and services for students with
disabilities.
Protect Title I funding for low-income schools.
Make college and trade school affordable, with emphasis on persons seeking
certification in early childhood education.
Fully Fund Head Start and child nutrition programs.
Streamline processing of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), with a focus on direct qualification for low-income students.
Increase number of therapists in schools including speech therapy, psychologists and
social workers.
Restore the full function of the Department of Education.
